Altar Servers at First Communion Mass
Every person has a gift to offer our parish community! If you are a child in grade 4 or higher, you can serve as an altar server at Masses in our parish.
What does an Altar Server do, you wonder? At St. Timothy's Altar Servers assist the priest and/or deacon as they preside over our prayer at Mass. This means that you would:
- carry candles or the processional cross during the entrance and closing processions
- hold the Presider's Book while Father prays certain prayers
- assist in preparing the altar for the Eucharistic Prayer
- assist in removing items from the altar as necessary
Most importantly, you would be an example of faith and prayer to other children (and to adults!) by your prayerful presence at Mass. By sharing your time and talent with the rest of the parish, you would be showing how much God is a part of your life.
As an altar server, you would be asked to serve at Mass about once a month (sometimes more frequently) or at seasonal celebrations such as Christmas and Easter Masses. In order to be prepared and to feel comfortable in this role, you would need to attend some training sessions. Training generally takes place in the fall (one afternoon or evening a week for 4 weeks) and new servers are always scheduled with more experienced servers who will continue to show you the ropes.
If you are interested in becoming an altar server, please contact Colleen Campion, the Director of Liturgy.
